Twenty-one

My phone beeped, notifying me of an incoming text. I’m home. It’s your move.

Sighing, I knew it was time to call it quits for the night. Martin had dropped a pin, letting me know he was at our apartment, which meant I didn’t have to make the drive back to his estate. He must have figured I’d be working late at the office. This would save time on the commute. Our apartment was also closer to the Martin Technologies building and the airport. It made sense why he’d chosen to spend the weekend there instead of at his house.

By the time I got home, I’d run myself into the ground trying to figure out exactly what I thought about the last few days. I let myself hope that Reagan would be able to tell us how he snuck in and out of Daria’s apartment undetected and that would prove someone else had been there the previous night and attacked her. But that hadn’t been the case.

Reagan said he had a key. He must have entered and exited in broad daylight, as if he were meant to be there. He probably behaved the way I did whenever I committed a B&E. That’s why no one ever reported it or even noticed. I was sure O’Connell would question Daria’s neighbors again and get some corroboration or proof, but that didn’t help Daria any. The truth of the matter was she hurt herself. It’d be up to the professionals to figure out why and how it happened. I failed her and Lucca.

Pushing open the door, I immediately spotted Martin. He was on the balcony with a drink in one hand and his phone in the other. He wasn’t pacing, but he kept moving from side to side, shifting his weight and stretching his legs. It must have been a long flight.

I closed and locked the front door, watching him through the sliding glass door. He put the phone away, swallowed the remainder of his drink in one gulp, and turned to come back inside. Our eyes met, and a smile tugged at his lips.

“Hey, beautiful,” he pulled the balcony door closed behind him and put the glass on the coffee table, “I figured you’d be working late.”

Butterflies filled my insides. “I missed you.”

He gave me a sexy grin. “Not enough to come see me.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No.” He moved toward me with a sudden urgency. Gripping my face in his hands, he kissed me hard on the mouth, stealing my breath away. My knees shook. He lifted me off the ground, and I wrapped my legs around his middle while he backed me against a wall, his lips never leaving mine. My fingers found their way into his hair. All I wanted was to lose myself in him and forget about these last few days. When the need for oxygen became too great, he backed up just an inch, his chest heaving. “I’m sorry. We never talked about any of this.”

“I don’t want to talk.” I tugged his face closer to mine, my lips latching on to his.
